Homework 1

is out. Due at the end of the lab period Monday (so you can ask me or the TAs questions in lab ...)

The first problem is tricky. Discussions of it are easy to find online, we will go over it in lecture on Monday a bit.

Dr. Leclair,

I'm not sure if I've done something wrong or skipped something, but I have no idea where to even start when it comes to solving these HW problems. I read through the notes and understand the concepts decently, but I don't have any examples in my notes to reference for help on these problems. Any advice?

I know what you mean. I have read and went back over the notes it seems like a million times and I am having difficulty deciding which equation to use. The only problem I am somewhat certain about is #2. Plus, #4 deals with time dilation and proper time. I know how to solve for velocity in normal circumstances, but I am unsure whether to use r for distance in this case since we are earth (circle). Basically, I am confused???

I had a ton of trouble too, but then I looked at the prior homework link and found some helpful problems and solutions very, VERY similar to the ones assigned. Hope this helps!

The last commenter is correct - the best way to learn how to do the problems is to look at as many example problems as possible. Read through the solutions of old HW problems, and it will make more and more sense. Some of the problems are nearly or exactly the same as ones that I've asked before too ...

We'll go over most of the HW questions in lecture tomorrow, they are not due until the lab period.
